The black bean originates from Latin America, specifically Mexico. There, the bean is used to make a dish called burrito (the word comes from Spanish and means "donkey", based on the tradition of burritos being distribuated by donkeys). The bean is very popular with vegetarians and vegans because it contains a large amount of protein, which needs to be absorbed, if not from meat, then from plant products.
